We Are In A Dry County
If you drink alcohol, buy it before you get here. The closest beer store is about 30 min away, the closest liquor store is about 35 min away in the other direction.
You can drink at a couple restaurants in town if you sign a membership book, but be prepared for a bit of a shocker in taxes. Don't give them a bad review because of the taxes, it is not their fault. Think of it as a convenience tax.
Warm Weather Brings Out The Critters
Snakes, ticks, chiggers, spiders, ants, mosquitos, and all kinds of other flying critters... they come out when the weather is warm.
We spray for bugs but we are in the woods. Be prepared. Check for ticks.
Equipment
What do you need?
Depends on what type of diamond hunting you plan on doing.
Surface Hunting:
Good walking shoes
Magnifying glass - without a light. Optional, but the diamonds can be really small and hard to see if you don't have perfect vision. Searching with a light is against the rules.
Digging Trip:
At least three buckets; two (or more) to fill from the field, one to take your washed rocks home. You are allowed to take out one 5-gallon bucket of washed rocked per person.
A wagon, unless you want to carry everything in and out.
A spade shovel to fill your buckets, and a small hand shovel to scoop your centers.
Screens - We are currently limited on the equipment we have available. Until we have more....
The State Park has rentals; search for 'rental' on their page. Take a picture of your receipt so you can get your deposit back if you lose it or it gets destroyed out on the field. They do sell out on busy days.
Lovejoy Diamond Screens on Facebook has diamond diggin packages for sale and rent.
Murfreesboro Hardware in town also has screens and wagons for sale and rent.
Bring your own. Diamonds are small, your smallest screen should be an 18 or 20 mesh depending on your preference. You want to stratify the rocks for the best chance at finding a diamond.
Gloves are recommended to protect your hands while washing the rocks.
The Crater Is A Field Of Dirt - You Will Get Dirty
Be prepared to get dirty. Don't expect your children to stay clean or dry.
